What’s wrong with your vehicle?
Pick what it’s doing. We’ll tell you what it usually means and the quickest way to get it sorted.
DPF warning light
Don’t keep clearing the code without finding the cause. We check soot loading, pressure readings, sensors and regeneration behaviour at your location — then tell you whether it needs a regen, a clean, or a repair first.
Engine management light
It could be a sensor, a misfire, an emissions fault or something minor. A code on its own won’t tell you which. We read the codes, check live data and test the likely cause before anything gets replaced. If the light is flashing, ease off and stop when it’s safe.
Won’t start
Clicking, slow cranking, or turning over but not firing — each points somewhere different: battery, starter, charging, fuel or immobiliser. We come to where the vehicle is and test it properly.
Loss of power
On a diesel, low power is often boost, EGR, DPF back-pressure or a sensor. We check live data instead of guessing at a turbo.
Limp mode
Limp mode protects the engine. Pull over somewhere safe. A restart may clear it for now, but the fault’s still there. On a diesel it’s usually DPF, EGR, boost or AdBlue related — get it read before it gets worse.
Brakes
Squealing, grinding, a pulling or juddering pedal, or a brake warning light. Pads and discs can usually be replaced on your drive. If you can hear metal on metal, keep driving to a minimum.
Service due
Oil, filters and the checks that matter, at your home or work. The right oil matters on a diesel with a DPF — we match it to your vehicle’s specification.
Smoke from the exhaust
The colour tells us a lot. Black usually means fuelling or boost. Blue means oil. Thick white that doesn’t clear can mean coolant or unburnt fuel. Visible smoke from a diesel with a DPF isn’t normal — and it’s an MOT fail.
Strange noise
Knocks, whines, squeals and rattles. Record a short video with the sound and send it on WhatsApp — it helps us narrow it down before we come out.
Battery keeps going flat
It could be the battery, the charging system, or something draining it overnight. We test all three. Stop-start batteries, and vehicles that need a new battery registering, are covered.
Something else
You don’t need to know what’s wrong. Tell us what the vehicle is doing — and when — and we’ll take it from there.
Your mobile mechanic across the South West
Brakes, servicing, a warning light, a car that won’t start — most of it gets fixed where the vehicle is parked. No garage drop-off, no lifts to arrange, no day lost.

Honest about what needs a workshop. Clutches, gearboxes and major engine work usually need a ramp. If your job does, we’ll diagnose it on site and tell you straight what happens next.
Stop guessing. Diagnose it.
Reading a code is only the beginning. We use fault codes, live data and the vehicle’s symptoms to find the likely cause before recommending a repair. You don’t pay for parts that weren’t the problem.

DPFs, explained properly
A DPF clean isn’t a cure-all, and we won’t pretend it is. Here’s what’s actually going on.
What a DPF does
A diesel particulate filter sits in the exhaust and traps soot. Inside is a honeycomb of tiny channels with alternate ends blocked, so the exhaust has to pass through porous walls — and the soot stays behind. Practically every diesel car and van built since 2011 has one.
Why it blocks
The filter is meant to empty itself by burning the soot off — a regeneration. That needs the exhaust to run very hot for long enough, which usually means steady driving at speed. Short trips and slow traffic interrupt it. Faulty sensors, EGR problems, worn injectors, oil getting into the exhaust, the wrong oil or low additive fluid all make it worse.
Why repeated forced regens aren’t always the answer
A forced regen burns off soot with the vehicle parked. It’s the right call when soot has built up and the rest of the system is healthy.
But if a sensor is reading wrong, the EGR is sticking, or the filter is loaded with ash — which doesn’t burn — the light comes back. Too much soot can also make a forced regen risky, and many vehicles won’t allow one past a set soot level.
Why diagnostics come first
The DPF light is the symptom, not the cause. We read the fault codes, check soot and ash readings, differential pressure, temperature sensors and regen history where the vehicle reports them — then look at what caused the build-up. That’s how you avoid paying for a clean when the real problem is a faulty sensor.
Common causes of repeat DPF faults
- Short journeys and stop-start driving
- A faulty DPF pressure sensor, or split or blocked sensor pipes
- Faulty exhaust temperature sensors
- EGR valve or cooler problems
- Injector faults creating extra soot
- Turbo or oil leaks into the exhaust
- The wrong oil (DPF diesels need a low-ash, low-SAPS spec)
- Low additive fluid, on vehicles that use it — some Peugeot, Citroën and Ford diesels, for example
When a professional clean helps
When the filter is heavily loaded with soot or ash, the substrate inside is intact, and whatever caused the build-up has been dealt with. Cleaning it on the vehicle brings back-pressure down without the cost of a new filter.
When a DPF needs replacing
If the substrate has cracked or melted — usually after an uncontrolled regeneration — or it’s so loaded with ash that cleaning can’t recover it. We’ll tell you straight if that’s the case, before you spend money on a clean.
Removing the DPF isn’t a legal alternative for a road vehicle. It’s an MOT failure and can lead to a fine.
Diesel fault codes you might see
A code points to where to look. It isn’t the answer on its own.
| Code | Meaning — and what often causes it |
|---|---|
| P2463 | DPF soot accumulation Interrupted regens, sensor faults, or a cause upstream. |
| P2002 | DPF efficiency below threshold Filter damage, sensor faults or exhaust leaks — needs checking before cleaning. |
| P2452–P2454 | DPF pressure sensor circuit / range Often the sensor or its pipes, not the filter. |
| P0401 | EGR flow insufficient Carbon build-up or a sticking valve. Feeds soot into the DPF. |
| P0299 | Turbo underboost Boost leaks, split hoses and actuators are common causes — not always the turbo. |
| P20EE | SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold AdBlue system: fluid quality, injector, NOx sensors or the catalyst. |

Questions people ask
How quickly can you get to me?
It depends on the day and where you are. Same-day visits are sometimes possible, especially for diagnostics and non-starts. Call or WhatsApp and we’ll give you an honest time before you book — we won’t promise a slot we can’t make.
Do you cover my postcode?
Our main area runs from Plymouth to Bristol: all of Devon and Somerset, plus Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire. That includes Plymouth, Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot, Exmouth, Tiverton, Barnstaple, Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and Bath. We also cover Cornwall, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Use the postcode checker above, or WhatsApp us your postcode.
Can a mobile mechanic fix my vehicle at home?
A lot of jobs, yes: diagnostics, batteries, starter motors, alternators, brakes, servicing, sensors, glow plugs and DPF work. Some jobs need a ramp or a workshop — clutches, gearboxes and major engine work, for example. If yours does, we’ll diagnose it on site and tell you straight what the next step is.
Do you work on vans?
Yes — cars and vans, including the diesel vans most trades and delivery drivers run. We can work at your yard or site too.
What happens if the car won’t start?
We come to where it is — your drive, your street or your workplace — and test the battery, charging and starting systems to find out why. Many non-starts can be fixed there and then. If it needs a workshop, we’ll tell you before you spend anything else.
How much is mobile diagnostics?
A mobile diagnostic visit is £120. That covers coming to you, reading the fault codes, checking live data and testing to find the likely cause. If you want the repair done, we’ll quote it before we start.
Does a DPF clean always fix a DPF warning light?
No — and anyone who says it does is guessing. A clean helps when the filter is blocked with soot or ash and the substrate is intact. If something else caused the blockage — a faulty sensor, EGR, injector or turbo problem — that needs fixing too, or the light comes back. We check first and tell you which it is.
What causes a DPF to block?
Mostly short journeys and stop-start traffic, which stop the filter burning off its soot. Faulty pressure or temperature sensors, EGR faults, injector problems, the wrong oil and low additive fluid on some vehicles all play a part. Over time ash builds up too, and ash can’t be burned off.
Can you diagnose EGR, turbo or sensor faults?
Yes. We use fault codes, live data and testing to find which part is actually at fault — so you don’t pay for a turbo when the problem is a split boost hose or a sticking EGR valve.
Can you work at my workplace?
Yes, if there’s safe space to work and you have permission for work to be done there. Business parks, yards and sites are fine for most jobs.
Do you carry parts?
For most repairs we confirm the right part for your vehicle first, give you the price, then bring it. That avoids guesswork and wasted trips.
Do I need to know what’s wrong before booking?
No. Tell us what the vehicle is doing — noises, lights, smells, when it happens — and we’ll take it from there. That’s what diagnostics is for.
How do I pay?
We’ll confirm how and when you pay when we book you in, so there are no surprises on the day. You’ll get an invoice for the work.
Do you work weekends?
Weekend appointments are sometimes available — it depends on the week. Request one in the booking form and we’ll tell you straight away if we can do it.
Can I send you a picture of my warning light?
Yes, please do. WhatsApp a photo to 07376 368839. A picture of the dashboard, the part or the engine bay often saves time.
